Returning to Complete That Degree?

Updated: Jan 16, 2023

5 Tips to Get You Started

  • Set realistic goals and expectations. Returning to college as an adult learner will include changes in your routine, so it's important to manage your expectations. Set short-term and long-term goals for yourself so that you can stay focused and motivated throughout your studies.

  • Connect with other adult learners. As an adult learner, you’re likely to have different experiences and perspectives than traditional learners. Reach out to other adult learners and form a study group or network of support.

  • Take advantage of available resources. Many colleges offer resources and services specifically for adult learners. Take advantage of the career services, academic advising and tutoring centers, and other support services available to you.

  • Balance your commitments. Depending on your lifestyle, it will be a change when balancing work, family, and college studies. Make sure to plan in advance and manage your time effectively. Also, schedule in time for yourself to relax and de-stress.

  • It’s important to remember why you decided to go back to school in the first place (career goal, personal goal, etc.). Remind yourself of your goals and focus on the long-term benefits of earning your degree.
